More people deserve great coaching and the ocean

Gold Coast sessions run from Mermaid Waters, Tallebudgera Creek and North Burleigh. Gold Coast based Head Coach Murray Stewart is an Olympic gold medallist, a three time Olympian, and has raced internationally across ocean racing, sprint canoe and surf life saving. Murray is an experienced paddle coach across every discipline of paddling, from beginner ski squads to National Champions, supported by a team of excellent local coaches who are passionate and knowledgeable.

Beyond weekly sessions we run multi day adventure camps along the WA coast and the East Coast, skills clinics for newer paddlers, downwind sessions and our own race events, including the Wreck Run. Whatever brings you to the water, we have a way in.

Show up. We do the thinking.

Every Paddle Collective session is part of a structured weekly program, written fresh each Sunday. It follows a season plan, a build phase, a speed phase, a taper into key races, so the work you do on a Tuesday morning connects to where you want to be months from now. Each week has a theme and a purpose built session, released in levels so a first timer and a national medallist can share the same water and both leave better.

You do not need to know any of that to show up. Just come. The coach briefs the session on the sand before you launch, and you paddle your level while we do the thinking.

Every session runs the same rhythm: arrive 15 minutes early and get set up, shore briefing, warm up, the main set scaled to your level, live coaching and feedback, cool down, then coffee and a debrief. Skis, paddles and safety gear provided, or bring your own.

Pricing and inclusions are being finalised. Register now, free, and you get the final package first: four days of guided paddling and coaching, support boat and skipper, your own or a supplied ski, three nights accommodation with the choice of swag, tent or cabin on South Stradbroke, and meal inclusions. Places are limited to keep the group manageable.

Four days exploring the Gold Coast coastline, chasing the best downwind conditions and making the most of everything this stretch of Queensland has to offer. Bring your own ski or have a craft supplied, leave the everyday behind, and join a crew who share your passion for surf ski and ocean racing. The highlight is an overnight stay on South Stradbroke Island on the final night.

The setup

Our support boat is alongside throughout the paddling sessions with a professional skipper at the helm: safety cover, hydration, equipment support and the option to step off the ski if needed. This is a paddling adventure, not a boat tour. The goal is to cover the coastline under your own power with the boat close by, and the daily route is adjusted to the conditions and the group.

A typical day

We make the most of the Gold Coast morning conditions, planning each session around the wind, swell and sea breeze. Expect downwind runs where conditions allow, technique sessions, open water exploration and plenty of time to put new skills into practice. The target is roughly 15 to 25km of paddling a day depending on conditions, group ability and the route.

The coaching

Downwind technique: reading runners, linking bumps and maintaining speed. Efficiency: stroke mechanics, balance and boat control. Ocean skills: positioning, reading conditions and making better decisions on the water. Race preparation: confidence, endurance and holding pace in changing conditions. Practical coaching you can take straight into your next session or race.

South Stradbroke Island

After three days of paddling and coaching we leave the mainland behind for an evening surrounded by beaches, waterways and coastal bushland. Choose a swag or tent under the stars, or cabin accommodation for a little more comfort. A relaxed island morning and the concluding paddle on Sunday finish the trip.

Day by day

Thursday 17 June: meet the crew, get set up, an introductory paddle to assess conditions and build confidence, then a group catch up and briefing. Friday 18 June: a focused technique session on efficient paddling, boat control and downwind skills, then a coastal paddle linking runners in open water. Saturday 19 June: the best available downwind conditions, then across to South Stradbroke Island for the overnight stay. Sunday 20 June: island morning, a final paddle chosen for the conditions, pack down and farewell. The itinerary is a guide only and is adjusted to weather, sea state, group safety and accommodation availability.

Accommodation and food

Three nights of accommodation including the island stay. The first two nights are arranged with the group to keep everyone together and close to the water. Meal arrangements and inclusions are confirmed before the event, with chances to enjoy the Gold Coast cafes and restaurants along the way. Unless specified in the final inclusions, allow for your own travel, meals, drinks and personal expenses.

Is this you?

You love being on a ski and you want a few days where paddling is the whole point. We paddle as a group and regroup often, so nobody gets left behind and nobody gets held up. On the way home you can swap onto the boat or into a double ski at any regroup, and there is no pressure to paddle every kilometre. If hardcore is your middle name, you can do every one of them.

The crew

Coaching from Reece Baker and Murray Stewart, Olympic gold medallist and three time Olympian in sprint kayaking with Aussie surf titles and plenty of downwind results. Fi Baker runs logistics and the kitchen, and Bec Stewart keeps the whole show moving.

The support boat

MV Wildcat, a commercially chartered vessel with a commercially qualified skipper who knows Rottnest waters very well, is with us for both crossings. We also run two double skis with a coach in each, so you can cycle in and out through the paddle. A PFD and leg leash are worn on every session, no exceptions.

Accommodation and food

A big share house at the southern end of Thomson Bay, a short walk from the pub and the sand. Linen and towels provided. All food on the island is included and cooked for you, hopefully with some fresh seafood in the mix. Lunch is waiting on the beach when you land on Sunday. Soft drinks are covered and alcohol is bring your own.

Day by day

Saturday: arrive, shakeout paddle at Port Beach, dinner in Cottesloe. Sunday: launch from Cottesloe mid morning and cross to Rottnest on the easterly, about 19km in short segments with regular regroups, lunch on the beach at Thomson Bay. Monday and Tuesday: island days, exploring both coasts, surfing, snorkelling. Wednesday: the full Doctor course home, a few days before the race itself.

Every summer afternoon the Fremantle Doctor rolls up the Perth coast and switches on runner after runner, km after km. We base at Sorrento Beach, a stone's throw from the water, and each day shuttle you to the best launch spot for the forecast. You paddle the runs at your pace, with expert coaching and local knowledge aplenty.

Coaching from local experts and current racing champions, small group size, structured technique sessions, video analysis and a menu of runs that lets us match every day to the wind and to you. Suits intermediate to advanced ocean paddlers: comfortably paddle 10km in under 70 minutes and remount confidently in open water. Not quite there? Ask about a double with a coach.

The Drummers Run, Perth's classic downwind, and its bigger sibling the Northern Drummers. The Snapper Run, our southern epic. The Mandurah Cut, a day trip south with a downwind finish through the cut. The Wreck Run, or the famous Ledge Point to Lancelin. Every run is chosen daily on wind, swell and the group. No two days the same.

Western Australia's north west coast is a natural wonder of coral reefs, rugged cliffs and untouched islands. Exmouth sits where the winds and the whale sharks are both on in July, with some of the world's premier downwind conditions on the ocean side and calm exploring on the gulf side.

The trip

This journey focuses on downwind mastery. Depending on conditions we paddle both the ocean and gulf sides of the peninsula. Calm days are for exploring unpaddled beaches and bays, with some diving and surfing; windy days are for downwinders. Optional downtime for a swim with whale sharks tour (extra cost).

Your coaches

Dean Gardiner, a local legend with unparalleled knowledge of the North West whose relaxed style hides a lifetime of experience on these waters. Reece Baker, international downwinder, surf lifesaver, kayaker and all round waterman, bringing technical precision that balances Dean's local intuition.

Logistics

Included: surf ski, lunches, drinks and all daily transport. Not included: flights and accommodation. We recommend staying in Exmouth, for example Osprey Holiday Village. Bring your paddle, PFD, leg leash, VHF radio, hydration bladder, sun protective clothing, booties for rocky entries and warm layers for cool nights.

Beginner paddlers on calm water with a coach
Learn to surf ski

Never paddled before? You are exactly who we built this for.

Expert coaching, all the gear provided and a first session that costs you nothing.

What is a surf ski, and can a beginner do it?

A surf ski is a long, sleek sit on top kayak built for open water. It looks fast because it is, but here is the part nobody tells you: it is one of the most beginner friendly ways into paddling, as long as you start in the right water with the right coach.

You do not need to be an athlete. You do not need to own a ski. You do not need ocean experience. Our beginner sessions start on the calm, protected canals at Mermaid Waters where balance and technique come quickly, and we stay right beside you the whole way. If you can swim and you are keen, you can learn to surf ski with us.

  • L2

  • L3

  • L4
Downwind and racing. Master downwind runs and ocean racing tactics.

What is included

All equipment provided

Ski, paddle and safety gear are ready for you. Bring your own if you have it, but you never need to.

Expert coaches, calm water

Experienced ocean coaches right beside you, starting on calm, protected water.

Your people

Small, friendly groups. You will know names by the end of session one and grab a coffee together after.

Beginner FAQs

Do I need my own surf ski?

No. We provide skis, paddles and all safety equipment. Just bring yourself, swimmers and a willingness to get wet.

Is surf ski hard for beginners?

It is easier to start than most people expect. We begin on calm, flat water where balance comes quickly, with a coach right beside you. Falling in is part of the fun, and we teach you to remount with control on day one.

How fit do I need to be?

If you can swim and you are reasonably active, you can start. Surf ski builds fitness as you go, and our beginner sessions are paced for first timers, not athletes.

What should I bring to my first session?

Swimmers, a towel, sun protection and water. We supply the rest, and your confirmation tells you exactly where to meet.

Is the first session really free?

Yes. Your first coached session is free with the code firstsessionfree at checkout. No commitment.

Meet the coaches

Coached by people who race

Murray Stewart OAM OLY · Gold Coast Head Coach

Australian Olympic kayaker and paddling coach. A three time Olympian, Murray represented Australia at London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, winning Olympic gold in the K4 1000m at London 2012. He is a World Champion surf ski paddler and a multiple Australian champion across sprint kayaking and surf ski, and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to kayaking and Australian sport.

Beyond sprint kayaking, Murray has an extensive international ocean racing career with podium finishes at many of the sport's leading events. That combination of Olympic sprint kayaking, ocean racing and surf life saving gives him a rare understanding of paddling performance across disciplines and conditions. He is currently the North Burleigh Surf Ski Coach, and his coaching focuses on efficient technique, speed, race strategy, fitness and the small technical details that make a difference on the water. Whether you are new to paddling, improving your surf skills or striving to compete at a higher level, Murray brings world class experience and a real commitment to helping paddlers reach their potential. He is supported by a team of local coaches who are passionate and knowledgeable.

Murray: 0403 069 743 · murray@paddlecollective.com

Reece Baker · Perth

Founder of Paddle Collective and one of WA's most accomplished ocean paddlers. Current WA Open Single Ski Champion and Open WA IOP Ocean Racing Series Champion. An Australian Representative Kayaker, five time Open National Aussies Champion and National Ocean Racing Series winner, inducted into the Surf Life Saving WA Hall of Fame. Reece writes the weekly program both states paddle.

Selma Alibegovic · Perth

Races for Sorrento SLSC as the only open female in the club's 68 year history to medal in surfski at national championships. As coach of Bayswater Paddlesports Club she led athletes to 19 national team selections in two seasons. What drives her most is developing young and beginner paddlers and breaking down barriers that keep people, especially women, out of the sport.

Jeremy Doney · Perth

Three decades in the surf along Perth's northern beaches. Few people read the water the Doctor blows down from Rottnest to Sorrento better than Jeremy, and he coaches from that local knowledge: how to find the runs, when to sit and wait, where the chop turns to gold.

Brendan Rice · Perth

An Australian Representative Paddler in both marathon and ocean racing, most recently at the 2025 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships. The paddler who waits at the back of the pack to talk a newcomer through their first downwind, then races the same course flat out the next weekend.

Mission

Find your people, fuel your passion. Our mission is to ignite the passion for paddling through transformative experiences. By creating unforgettable moments on the water, we inspire and connect paddlers through the power of collective adventure.

Why we coach

Everyone on this page still races. That is the point.

We coach the way we were coached: on the water, beside you, with a plan for where you are heading. Every session is written to a season, every camp has a coach in the double and a boat on the water, and the first thing we teach is how to remount. Whether you are chasing your first kilometre on a ski or a start line at the Doctor, you will be coached by someone who has done it recently and still loves it.

Privacy Policy

Effective date: 15 October 2026. This version replaces the policy dated 22 October 2025.

This policy explains how Paddle Collective collects, holds, uses and discloses personal information through paddlecollective.com.au, goldcoast.paddlecollective.com.au, our booking system, our online shop, our mobile app, our events and camps, and our communications with you.

Paddle Collective (ABN 67 690 991 729) operates paddlecollective.com.au and goldcoast.paddlecollective.com.au, all sessions and subscriptions in Western Australia and Queensland, all camps and clinics, the online shop and the mailing list.

In this policy "we", "us" and "our" means Paddle Collective. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), whether or not the Act formally applies to us at a given time.

What we collect

Information you give us when you book, buy, subscribe, register for an event or contact us:

  • Name, email address, phone number and address
  • Date of birth where a session, camp or race has an age requirement
  • Emergency contact name and phone number for camps, races and multi day trips
  • Signed waiver and release, including your signature
  • Anything you choose to tell your coach in the "Message for Coaches" field, which may include health, fitness or injury information relevant to your safety on the water
  • Payment details, which are handled by our payment providers and never stored by us
  • Ski preference, hire details and gear sizes
  • Social media handles if you tag or message us
  • Photos and video taken at sessions, camps and events where you have given media consent on the waiver

Information collected automatically when you use the website or app: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, time and date of visit, and the approximate region you are visiting from. We use your region to send you to the Perth or Gold Coast version of the site. We do not store that lookup against your name.

Health and fitness information

If you give us information about a medical condition, injury, medication or fitness level, we treat it as sensitive information. By providing it you consent to us using it to keep you safe on the water, sharing it with the coach running your session or camp, and passing it to emergency services or medical staff if you are hurt. We only ask for what we need to run a safe session. You can decline to provide it, but for some activities (camps, crossings, downwind runs) we may not be able to take you if we do not have enough information to manage the risk.

Why we collect it

  • To run your booking, subscription, hire, purchase or camp and to communicate with you about it, including weather calls, cancellations and changes
  • To keep you safe, including sharing relevant details with your coach and with emergency services
  • To hold a signed waiver for insurance and legal purposes
  • To send you news, session reminders, camp launches and offers where you have subscribed or booked with us, with an unsubscribe link in every email
  • To run races, events, competitions and giveaways
  • To operate, secure and improve the website, booking system and app
  • To comply with the law, manage insurance claims and incident reports, and resolve disputes

We do not sell personal information.

Who we share it with

We use third party providers to run the business. Each one holds only what it needs for its job:

  • Wix: hosts the website, the booking system, the online shop, member accounts, the mobile app, contact records and form submissions, including signed waivers
  • Wix Payments and Stripe: process card payments. We do not see or store your card number
  • MailerLite: sends our newsletter and camp announcements and holds your name, email and which list or group you are in
  • Xero: holds invoices and payment records for camps, deposits and ski orders
  • Google Analytics and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) tools: measure how the website performs and let us show ads to people who have visited
  • An IP geolocation service (currently ipapi.co): receives your IP address only, to work out which state you are visiting from

We also share information with:

  • Our coaches and staff, for the sessions and camps they run
  • Emergency services, medical staff and surf lifesaving personnel if you are injured
  • Our insurer, lawyers and accountants where needed for a claim, dispute or compliance
  • Partners who help deliver a specific camp or event (for example a ferry operator, accommodation provider or race organiser), limited to what they need for that event
  • Courts, regulators and law enforcement where the law requires it, including WorkSafe WA or Workplace Health and Safety Queensland for incident reporting

Overseas storage

Wix, MailerLite, Stripe, Google and Meta store data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States, the European Union and Israel. Those providers operate under their own privacy and security frameworks. By using our services you acknowledge that your information will be stored and processed by these providers overseas.

How we protect it

Access to booking, member and health information is limited to the people who need it. Our site owner and administrator accounts are protected with two factor authentication. Coaches have access to the sessions they run, not to the full customer database. We do not keep card numbers. We delete exports of customer data once they have served their purpose. No system is perfectly secure, and if a breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm we will tell you and, where required, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

How long we keep it

  • Booking records, signed waivers and incident reports: 7 years, for insurance and legal purposes
  • Health and fitness notes given for a single session: deleted or de-identified once no longer needed for safety, and in any case within 12 months
  • Emergency contact details: for the duration of the camp or event they were collected for, then deleted
  • Marketing contacts: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete you
  • Financial records: 7 years, as required by tax law
  • Website analytics: as set by Google and Meta, in aggregated form

Children

Paddlers under 18 must be booked by a parent or guardian, who signs the waiver on their behalf. We collect only what we need to coach them safely and we do not market directly to children.

Your rights

You can ask us at any time to:

  • Tell you what personal information we hold about you
  • Correct anything that is wrong or out of date
  • Delete your information, subject to the retention periods above
  • Stop sending you marketing, which you can also do with the unsubscribe link in any email
  • Withdraw media consent, after which we will stop using new photos or video of you and remove existing ones from our channels where practical

We will respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm your identity first.

If you are booking for someone else, you confirm you have their permission to give us their details.

Cookies

The website uses cookies for essential functions (keeping you logged in, holding your cart, remembering that you have already been redirected to the right region), for analytics, and for advertising through Google and Meta. You can block or delete cookies in your browser; essential functions may stop working if you do.

Complaints

Contact our privacy officer using the details below. We will investigate and reply in writing. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or 1300 363 992.

Changes

We will post any changes on this page and update the effective date. Material changes will be emailed to current members.

Paddle Collective Web Accessibility Statement

Effective Date: October 22, 2025

Paddle Collective is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. We are continuously working to improve the accessibility and usability of our website for all people. If you have any questions or need assistance with any part of our site, please contact us.

At Paddle Collective, we are dedicated to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities. We strive to make our website, paddlecollective.com.au, and associated digital services (such as our booking system and email communications) inclusive and usable by everyone, regardless of ability, device, or environment. This Accessibility Statement outlines our current practices and ongoing commitment to accessibility.

We recognize that accessibility is a fundamental right and aligns with our mission to create an open, welcoming community for ocean paddling along the Western Australian coastline. By prioritizing accessible design, we aim to remove barriers so that everyone can discover, book, and enjoy our clinics, camps, and events.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Paddle Collective is committed to continuously improving the accessibility of our digital platforms. We conduct regular audits, incorporate user feedback, and collaborate with accessibility experts to enhance usability. Our goal is to meet or exceed established standards, making our content available to the widest possible audience.

Standards and Guidelines

We design and develop our website in accordance with:

  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1: At Level AA conformance, as recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This includes requirements for perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust content.
  • Australian Web Accessibility Standards: Aligned with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and guidance from the Australian Human Rights Commission, ensuring compliance with national legal obligations.
  • Digital Service Standard: Following principles from the Australian Digital Service Standard for user-centered, inclusive design.

Key features we implement include:

  • Keyboard Navigation: Full site navigation possible using only a keyboard.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility: Alt text for images, semantic HTML for structure, and ARIA labels where needed.
  • Color and Contrast: Minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratios for text and sufficient color differentiation.
  • Responsive Design: Optimized for various screen sizes, including mobile devices and assistive technologies.
  • Captioning and Transcripts: For any video content (e.g., instructional paddling videos), we provide closed captions and transcripts.
  • Form Accessibility: Clear labels, error identification, and instructions for booking forms.

Current Accessibility Status

Our website currently conforms to WCAG 2.1 Level AA for most pages, including the homepage, booking system, blog, and contact forms. We use tools like WAVE, axe, and Lighthouse for ongoing testing. However, we acknowledge that some third-party integrations (e.g., payment processors or embedded maps) may have limitations beyond our control, and we work with vendors to address these.

As of October 22, 2025:

  • Fully Accessible: Core navigation, booking process, and content pages.
  • In Progress: Enhanced mobile gesture support and live chat (if implemented).
  • Known Limitations: Older blog posts may lack updated alt text; we are retrofitting these.

We perform automated and manual audits quarterly and after major updates.

Feedback and Reporting Accessibility Barriers

We value input from all users and encourage you to report any accessibility issues you encounter. Your feedback helps us improve.

  • How to Report: Email us at admin@paddlecollective.com.au with details of the issue (e.g., page URL, description of the barrier, and your assistive technology). We aim to respond within 5 business days and resolve issues within 30 days where feasible.
  • Anonymous Reporting: Feel free to submit feedback without personal details.
  • Contact for Assistance: For booking help, call 0438 950 866 or DM us on Instagram @paddleco_au and we can guide you through alternatives.

If you believe we have failed to address an accessibility concern, you may also contact the Australian Human Rights Commission at humanrights.gov.au or 1300 656 419.

Enforcement and Compliance

Paddle Collective complies with applicable accessibility laws, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth). We appoint an Accessibility Coordinator to oversee progress and report annually on improvements. Non-compliance claims can be directed to us first, with escalation to regulatory bodies if needed.

Changes to This Statement

We may update this Accessibility Statement periodically to reflect improvements, legal changes, or site updates. The latest version will always be posted here, with notifications via our newsletter for subscribers.
